BIGS
David Sills
West Coast tenorman David Sills's debut album on Naxos, Journey
Together, was justly celebrated for its brilliant musicianship and
unswerving allegiance to musical features forever associated with
Californian jazz: light but vigorous swing, clarity of execution,
unfussy virtuosity. On this follow-up album, Sills -sensibly utilises
the same personnel and exploits his incredible tone - one of the
most meltingly lovely tenor sounds since that of Stan Getz - to
explore an intelligently chosen mix of jazz classics and in-house
originals. His warm, surefooted approach blends perfectly with Alan
Broadbent's sparkling, lyrical piano and Larry Koonse's neat but
lively guitar, and his rhythm section provide impeccable support
on the recording's lush ballads, boppish up-tempo pieces and the
gently gliding Jobim theme 'Zingaro'. Sills has produced another
wholly absorbing and immediately accessible album, and the fact
that it sells for about two-fifths of the usual CD price is an added
bonus.
