Journey Together
Naxos Jazz- 86023-2
The cool-toned tenor of David Sills is featured on this likable
release. Sills does a reasonable impression of Warne Marsh on Lennie
Tristano's "317 East 32nd Street" and his own "Where
It's At" (based on "What Is This Thing Called Love"),
but Sills actually considers Joe Henderson one of his main influences.
The 28-year-old tenorman is a fine improviser whose musical interests
mostly lie in jazz of the 1950s and '60s. His tastes are shared
by his sidemen: pianist Alan Broadbent (who sometimes steals solo
honors), subtle guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Darek Oles and drummer
Joe LaBarbera. Sills is particularly strong on the ballads ("Soul
Eyes" and "We'll Be Together Again"), where his tone
is a bit haunting. Overall, this is an excellent set of fairly advanced
straight-ahead jazz.
